The reverse record

A PTR record maps an IP address back to a hostname. It is set by whoever owns the IP block — usually your host.

Forward-confirmed

If the PTR hostname resolves back to the same IP, rDNS is "forward-confirmed". Gmail and Outlook expect this for mail servers.

Why it matters

Mail from an IP with no PTR, or a generic one, is far more likely to be rejected or sent to spam.

Reverse DNS Lookup — FAQ

What is reverse DNS?+
Reverse DNS turns an IP address into a hostname using a PTR record — the opposite of a normal lookup, which turns a hostname into an IP.
How do I set a PTR record?+
Only the owner of the IP block can set it. On a The PowerHost VPS or dedicated server, raise a ticket with the hostname and we set the PTR for your IP.
Why does my mail server need rDNS?+
Most receiving servers check that the sending IP has a PTR record that resolves back to the same IP. Missing or mismatched rDNS is a common spam signal.
